RT-AC56R and RT-AC56R are the same device and both will work with the same firmware image, the name difference is only related to commercial packaging. See forum thread for more details.
Based on the Asuswrt firmware developed by Asus, it brings tweaks, new features and other improvements to the original firmware, while retaining its performance and ease of use.
NOTE: This is not a firmware upgrade utility and cannot be used on a working ASUS Wireless Router. Normal firmware upgrades must be done through the web interface.
Asuswrt-Merlin is a third party alternative firmware for Asus routers, with a special emphasis on tweaks and fixes rather than radical changes or collecting as many features as possible.
